In the poem My Last Duchess, love is portrayed as a very robust emotion. It is never stated in the poem that the Duchess was killed, but the readers are able to entail that is what happened. The Dutch was a very envious and controlling man, with high status which is what the readers imply lead to the killing of the character the Duchess. A major theme of the poem is jealousy which ended up in a murder, but that should not include that Dutch did not love the Duchess, but that he did. It is important to consider the definition of love and jealousy, under the Dutch’s status, and also if love is even a positive emotion. Oxford dictionaries defines love as â€Å"an intense feeling of deep affection.†while Free dictionary defines jealous as â€Å"†¦show more content†¦There she stands As if alive.† After reading this one can imply that the Dutch has had enough of the smiling at other men and the attention other men got and had her killed. It is important thou gh to pay attention to the word â€Å"stoop† that Browning uses before that quote; â€Å"E’en then would be some stooping; and I choose Never to stoop.† Stoop is defined as â€Å"to descend from a superior rank, dignity, or status.† The Dutch is a an old and wise man with power; more specifically nine-hundred years old. Which is an important factor to take into account when it comes to being able to express ones emotion and being open to that kind of vulnerablility.One should be able to see that these jealous feelings only come about because of his love towards the Duchess.
